About 2 years ago, Rob Henderson, the Yale author was asked about birthrates as a small book signing in S.F. (I and perhaps 50 other people were there.) His answer, verbatim, “It appear humans do not have an instinct to reproduce.” We all laughed, but he went on (paraphrase)… “Oh, we have a sexual instinct (esp man) and have known for millennia that sex produces babies, and we have an instinct to take care of babies (esp women). Those 2 instincts were sufficient to ensure human reproductive success. Then we invented the Pill, and now they’re not.” (pun intended) Phrased that way, it’s rather self-evident that the acceptance of pharmacological birth control (the medical manifestation of modern feminism) is an extinction event for any society. I don’t particularly like this, since I want my daughters to have every opportunity to pursue their dreams. But… Rob’s right.

Thanks for going through all the possible causes and weeding out the false ones. Feminism does seem to be the “winner” here. (I do think that widespread pollution—microplastics, endocrine disrupters—probably contribute. If they are enough to trans wild frogs, they aren’t likely to be good for us either.)
